Because ducks roost on the ground at night, they are susceptible to predators. Under most circumstances, ducks should be locked up at nighttime in a yard that is tightly fenced with woven wire or netting at least four feet high.

What do ducks need to live in backyard?

Ducks need minimal shelter. They should have the option of getting out of the rain, sun, and wind if they choose. For up to four ducks, a good sized dog house is quite sufficient (2 feet by three feet for 2 ducks; 3 feet by 4 feet for four ducks). Make sure that the opening faces away from the prevailing winds.

Do backyard ducks need a pool?

Pine shavings are highly recommended. As with chicks, do not use newspapers or cedar chips as bedding; newspapers are so slick they can damage the duckling's legs and cedar chips give off harmful fumes.

What is the best flooring for duck house?

Duck houses can sit directly on the ground but should have a wooden or cement floor so predators can't dig underneath to gain access. A piece of inexpensive vinyl flooring over the floor makes for easy clean-up, and also prevents the floor from getting wet if you leave water in the house overnight for your ducks.

Will my duck fly away?

If your ducks are heavy, they won't be flying away anytime soon. Clipping their wings is probably not necessary. However, if you have a lighter duck breed such as a muscovy, it's a possibility that they might fly away.

Do ducks like shade or sun?

Shade is extremely important, especially in the middle of the day when the sun is hottest. You will notice your ducks will find a nice shaded spot to nap and conserve their energy during the hottest part of the day. A shade screen or partially covered pen is a good idea, as is a raised house they can nap underneath.

Do ducks need daily care?

Ducks need quality duck/waterfowl-specific feed and fresh drinking water provided daily. Ducks (and especially ducklings) have specialized nutritional needs. Ideally, you can also provide them with fresh greens daily or at least a few times per week (chopped lettuce, kale, etc.).

Do ducks need to swim everyday?

Although ducks would prefer to have a large and deep pond to swim in every day, one is not necessary to keep them happy and healthy – and in water. In the duck coop run, a small hand-dug garden pond or a plastic baby pool will suffice.
